FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A CARBON OFFSET AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?
Carbon offsets are investments in projects that reduce or avoid greenhouse gas emissions. They are measured in tonnes of carbon equivalency—a unit that accounts for the global warming potential of all greenhouse gases by converting their impact into the equivalent impact of carbon. Individuals & companies can purchase carbon offsets to compensate for their own emissions. If they purchase the equal amount of tonnes that they emit, then they are carbon neutral.
Although reducing emissions is the best solution to ensure less greenhouse gases, we can’t avoid all emissions—like travelling to this event. When emissions cannot be avoided, offsetting emissions is the best solution to reduce your impact. Investing in carbon offset projects supports climate change solutions and the transition to a low carbon economy.
